DML vs DDL

Posted by Leave a Comment

Most of the time, when referring to DML (Data Manipulation Language) and DDL (Data Definition Language), we are simply talking subsets of SQL commands.

DML is the set of commands which modify the data itself. A few of these common commands are:

  • SELECT
  • UPDATE
  • INSERT
  • DELETE

DDL is the set of commands which modify the schema, or structure of the database. This includes commands such as:

  • CREATE
  • DROP
  • ALTER
  • TRUNCATE

Check out the Wikipedia articles for DML and DDL for more information.
